Georgia stands at a pivotal moment that will shape the direction of health policy in our state. With an open governor’s race in 2026, along with other open seats, we’re on the cusp of significant political transition. While new leadership introduces uncertainty, it also creates opportunity. This moment opens the door for nonpartisan, nonprofit, private foundations like our team at Georgia Health Initiative to play a constructive role in elevating community priorities to shape a health policy agenda designed to work for all Georgians.
Strengthening Health Care Access for People with Disabilities: Lessons for Philanthropy
In July, we recognize Disability Pride Month, marking the anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and celebrating the contributions and diverse identities of people with disabilities. While the ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability and establishes protections and requirements for employers, state, and local governments, and other areas of public life, many people with disabilities still face barriers.
UniHealth Foundation: July 2026
UniHealth Foundation recently launched its Healthy Neighbors Small Grants Program. The new initiative will fund nonprofits focused on enhancing community health and wellness in Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre, and South Pasadena, California. Grant awards will range from $5,000 to $10,000, with decisions announced in late fall 2026.

The SCAN Foundation: September 2023
The SCAN Foundation published a report analyzing 2014-2020 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) data. The analysis found racial inequities in telehealth, access to care, and health status during the first year of the pandemic. In 2020, non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic adults over 50 experienced worse self-reported health status, used less telehealth, delayed care more, and were less likely to have their care preferences considered compared to their white counterparts.
KFF: September 2023
KFF released three reports analyzing Medicare Advantage’s impact on enrollment, benefits and cost-sharing, and bonus payments. One report found that “federal spending on bonus payments to insurance companies that offer Medicare Advantage plans” will be at least $12.8 billion, around 30 percent more than in 2022 and more than four times the spending in 2015.
Healthy Communities Foundation: September 2023
Healthy Communities Foundation recently published its General Operating Support in Action: 2021-2022 Insights Report, which showcases learnings in its first year implementing new evaluation and flexible funding approaches. The report also outlines the impact of multiyear general operating support for grantee partners.

Applications for The Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation’s 2023 Fall Grant Cycle are now open until October 2. Technical Assistance sessions will be available September 11-25.
Humana Foundation: September 2023
The Humana Foundation is partnering with Greater Louisville Inc. to provide one-year grants between $50,000 and $100,000 to small business mental health providers in the Louisville, Kentucky, community.
