WASHINGTON, DC, April 13, 2023— Grantmakers In Health (GIH) is pleased to announce Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan, President and Chief Executive Officer of the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, as the 2023 recipient of the Terrance Keenan Leadership Award in Health Philanthropy, and Mr. Gregory Jackson, Executive Director of the Community Justice Action Fund, as the 2023 recipient of the Andy Hyman Award for Advocacy.
“We are thrilled to honor Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan and Mr. Gregory Jackson as the recipients of the 2023 Grantmakers In Health awards,” said GIH President and CEO Cara V. James. “Their tireless commitment to improving health equity and driving meaningful change is truly inspiring.”
Minter-Jordan is both a physician and business executive, leading a dynamic team of professional and clinical experts committed to building a future where every person can reach their full potential through excellent health. In selecting Dr. Minter-Jordan, this year’s committee members were particularly impressed by her ability to call out inequity and injustice wherever she sees it and by her leading meaningful action to drive change on this issue throughout her career.
Jackson is a gun violence survivor, community organizer, political strategist, and issue advocate. While being questioned by law enforcement in his hospital bed, Jackson remembers being treated like a criminal rather than a victim. This experience and recovery propelled him into action, becoming a leading voice on gun violence prevention for communities of color. In selecting Mr. Jackson, the committee lauded his ability to advance the sector of violence reduction by building it into a broader public health approach and framing community violence intervention as one of the first steps towards a comprehensive, people-centered approach to create safer and healthier communities.
The awards will be presented to Minter-Jordan and Jackson on June 8, 2023, at GIH’s Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
About the Terrance Keenan Leadership Award in Health Philanthropy
First presented by Grantmakers In Health in 1993, the Terrance Keenan Leadership Award recognizes a grantmaker whose work is distinguished by leadership, innovation, achievement, creativity, and boldness.
The award was established in honor of Terrance Keenan and his more than 40 years of service and contributions to the field. By example and instruction, Keenan charged philanthropy with exercising the freedom to invest in leadership and develop new institutions and systems to confront major needs. He encouraged us to embrace both the freedom to fail and the freedom to persist.
About the Andy Hyman Award for Advocacy
First presented by Grantmakers In Health in 2017, the Andy Hyman Award for Advocacy recognizes a nonprofit or public sector champion who embodies a commitment to principled action, leadership to advance social change, and dedication to making progress in policy and practice despite challenging political environments.
The award pays tribute to Andy Hyman, a smart, passionate, and innovative grantmaker committed to social justice. Hyman asked hard questions, expected honest answers, and never shied away from difficult challenges. Those who knew and worked with him were touched by his humility and his dedication to social justice.
Each year, the award is made possible through the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
