Philanthropy’s Response to Haiti

Learn what grantmakers and other organizations are doing in response to the disaster in Haiti.

Association of Small Foundations and its Katrina @ Five Partners hosted the call Earthquake in Haiti: A Briefing for the Foundation Community on January 21. Participants heard on-the-ground information and from experienced grantmakers in disaster response. For an audio recap of the call, click here.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation will distribute up to $150,000 toward on-the-ground efforts in Haiti. Additionally, the foundation will guarantee a two-to-one match for contributions made by its staff, will provide support to victims’ families living in the United States, and is exploring opportunities for experts on staff to provide assistance on-site.

Charity Navigator has identified the top-rated charities in Haiti and provides tips for funding relief efforts.

Council on Foundations provides a comprehensive list of how foundations and corporate giving programs are responding to the earthquake in Haiti. The list also includes the work of nongovernmental organizations and government agencies, as well as resources and media outlets covering the disaster.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy lists a sampling of grants awarded by funders toward disaster relief in Haiti.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided a $1 million grant to Catholic Relief Services and a $500,000 grant to Partners in Health. They have also created a Web page that provides information on how individuals can help and names of organizations involved in relief efforts.

GreatNonprofits and GuideStar have teamed up to launch https://greatnonprofits.org/haiti, a new Web site that focuses on disaster response and gives reviews of nonprofits working in Haiti.

Kaiser Permanente has contributed $500,000 to support four key organizations on the ground in Haiti: Doctors Without Borders, Relief International, Operation USA and MedShare International. It has also created the blog Dispatches from Haiti, which allows relief workers to share their stories.

National Council for Community and Behavioral Healthcare, through its Project Helping Hands, is offering small emergency grants and free mental health first aid training to support efforts in the wake of the devastating earthquake.

Partners in Health, cofounded by Paul Farmer, a keynote speaker at the 2006 GIH annual meeting, has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. The organization has launched the Web site “Stand with Haiti,” which includes a section on how to volunteer and donate supplies.

The Pew Charitable Trusts (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) donated a total of $500,000 to support efforts in Haiti. Grants of $250,000 each have been given to the American Red Cross and CARE.

Philanthropy News Digest’s PhilanTopic blog compiles Haiti-related efforts of dozens of organizations and helpful information for individuals who would like to contribute to the relief effort.

Phoenixville Community Health Foundation awarded a special grant of $10,000 to Doctors Without Borders.

Public Welfare Foundation (Washington, DC) awarded a $20,000 grant to support Partners in Health and their relief efforts in Haiti.

To support efforts in Haiti, The Regence Foundation (Portland, Oregon) made a $50,000 donation to Medical Teams International, an organization that sends doctors and trained volunteers to provide medical assistance throughout the world.
