Anchorum Health Foundation began as Anchorum St. Vincent, a 50 percent partner in CHRISTUS St. Vincent (CSV) Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Over 15 years, it helped transform CSV into New Mexico’s highest rated and safest hospital. Despite this achievement, health outcomes in northern New Mexico are worsening. While quality healthcare is crucial, numerous other factors are impacting the community’s health. In response, Anchorum shifted from a health care partnership to a community partnership, aiming to improve the social conditions affecting the health of northern New Mexico’s people and communities.
Anchorum is dedicated to improving the conditions that have the greatest influence on the health of communities and people in their region. It is committing its resources to strengthening community-based partners tackling critical local issues.
The foundation’s service area is the 13 northern counties of New Mexico and 23 Tribal Nations and Pueblos. The region is defined by its rich cultural heritage, diverse communities, and stunning landscapes. Northern New Mexico is home to a blend of Indigenous, Hispanic, and other cultural traditions that have shaped its identity over centuries.

Communities in Schools of New Mexico (CISNM)—Supports programming in northern New Mexico public schools for the 2024-2025 academic year. CISNM uses a holistic approach to addressing both the academic and nonacademic needs of students. ($200,000)
Think New Mexico—Supports action-oriented policy research and advocacy work aligned with Anchorum’s focus areas related to access to care and social determinants of health. The goal is to improve access to health care by reducing the health care worker shortage. ($150,000)
501CPA—Provides essential operational support to community-based health and social services organizations by strengthening their administrative capacity and alleviating the burden of complex accounting tasks. ($100,000)
Jicarilla Apache Nation—Supports the purchase of a Spot Vision machine and a HemoCure machine which provide standard-of-care tests per well-child exam standards. Any balance of funds may be used to support the needs of Jicarillla Apache Nation’s pediatric population. ($15,000)
Anchorum Health Foundation and GIH
Anchorum greatly appreciates being part of the Grantmakers in Health network, where it finds invaluable opportunities to learn from peers and gain fresh perspectives. It is inspired by the innovative strategies shared by other regions to address pressing issues like homelessness, healthcare workforce development, and nonprofit capacity building. It looks forward to continuing to learn from the collective expertise of the GIH community.
The Importance of Community Engagement and Adaptability
“At Anchorum Health Foundation, our work starts by listening—understanding our communities’ strengths and challenges—and co-designing solutions driven by their voices. We know that every solution looks different. We pride ourselves on our adaptability. We can play many roles—leader, funder, convener, or supporter—depending on where we can make the greatest impact and what is being asked of us.”
–Jerry Jones, President & CEO, Anchorum Health Foundation
