The Y.C. Ho/Helen and Michael Chiang Foundation was established from a charitable bequest made by the late Y.C. Ho, and has been governed since inception by his family members, the Chiangs. The foundation made its first health-focused grant in 2007 and the next year began funding in its current main program area of palliative care. To date, the foundation has awarded over $25 million in grants to palliative care programs.
The foundation’s mission is to help improve the quality of life for patients and families facing serious illnesses. Its vision is that all adults and children with a serious illness diagnosis will be able to live as well as possible for as long as possible, and that they and their families will have access to the collaborative, supportive (palliative) care they need in order to do so. The foundation’s palliative care grantmaking benefits adult and pediatric patients with serious illnesses, as well as their families. Two-thirds of its grantmaking is focused on New York, New York, but it also funds some regional and national programs.
Program Information:
The Ho/Chiang Foundation’s main priority is addressing the acute palliative care workforce shortage through interdisciplinary education and training grants—including fellowships—for doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other clinicians. Its education and training grants represent at least 70 percent of its palliative care grantmaking each year and are helping to build the workforce for both adult and pediatric palliative care. It also makes grants to help bring palliative care to patients and families who need it outside of a hospital setting and to vulnerable populations.

Ho/Chiang Foundation and GIH
In joining GIH, the Ho/Chiang Foundation staff sees an opportunity to learn more about “bigger picture” health issues in the United States than the ones they are immersed in on a day-to-day basis focusing mainly on palliative care.
Role of Philanthropy in Meeting Press Needs
“In addition to exposing the ongoing racial and ethnic health care disparities in our country, the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how crucial palliative care is in supporting patients and families as they navigate serious illness. It has unfortunately also drawn attention to how (relatively) few clinicians are trained in providing palliative care. Funders can help address this gap and make sure our most vulnerable populations are getting the culturally competent, compassionate care they need when they are seriously ill.”
