Regardless of the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections, the landscape of health policy in the United States will be shaped by recent political realities—and the stakes could not be higher. Threats to Medicaid, SNAP, and the broader safety net, rising challenges to democratic institutions, and a public health infrastructure under strain make improving health outcomes more difficult and more urgent than ever. Philanthropy has a critical role to play in supporting communities and charting a path forward that alters systems and policies to ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to achieve their highest level of health.
The 2026 Grantmakers In Health (GIH) Health Policy Exchange will provide space to assess the post-election environment, identify where investment and action are most urgently needed, and explore ways health funders can mobilize to advance health and well-being for all at the federal, state, and local levels.

Rural Health Philanthropy Partnership
Grantmakers In Health (GIH), the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, the National Rural Health Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office of Rural Health co-host an annual convening welcoming foundations, federal entities, and other partners to discuss how our combined efforts might produce better health outcomes for rural communities.

CEO Working Group Webinar: New CEOs
It is a difficult time for many, but especially for those who are new to their role. Grantmakers In Health is pleased to convene the CEO Working Group in October, to offer foundation leaders who have been in their position for less than five years the opportunity to discuss the challenges they are facing as new CEOs with one another and seasoned leaders in the field. These calls are open to GIH Funding Partner CEOs, Presidents, Executive Directors, or the highest-ranking health staff at multi-issue foundations. During these candid, confidential conversations, philanthropic leaders share information, swap strategies, raise concerns, and ask for one another’s advice. Reach out to Ann Rodgers to learn more.
SNAP Funder Working Group: Advocacy Opportunities Post-Election
One year after the passage of H.R. 1, analysis from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities finds that at least 1.5 million fewer children — and more than 4.5 million fewer people overall — are receiving SNAP food assistance. SNAP participation has dropped in every state except Alaska, and by as much as 10 percent in some states. The harms to communities will continue to grow as states fully implement eligibility restrictions. This Working Group Call will provide a space for funders to share where they are focusing efforts, where they see the biggest funding gaps, and where there are opportunities to align with other funders. We will also use this time to gather input on future discussion topics and determine the Working Group meeting cadence going forward.
