Philanthropy @ Work – Transitions – January 2018

Lindsay Prunella

The Mat-Su Health Foundation welcomed Lindsay Prunella as Program Coordinator for R.O.C.K. (Raising Our Children with Kindness), a collaborative of community members—individuals and organizations—joining together to promote family resilience and reduce child maltreatment. Ms. Prunella is helping advance the mission of R.O.C.K. Mat-Su by supporting day-to-day communication and administration, community engagement, and funding development. R.O.C.K. Mat-Su is a cross-sector collaborative working to promote family resilience and reduce child maltreatment in the Mat-Su Borough.

Ms. Prunella was previously the Director of a coalition created to help youth make healthy choices, and a Prevention Specialist in Michigan. She also worked for Alaska Community Island Services as a Prevention Specialist focused on reducing adult heavy and binge drinking and youth alcohol consumption.

David Jordan

The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund welcomes David Jordan as its new President, effective in February. Mr. Jordan is currently Executive Director of Alliance for a Healthy Kansas, where he has served since 2016. He will succeed the fund’s first president Kim Moore, who has led the organization since 1987 and is retiring at the end of January 2018.

At the Alliance, Mr. Jordan oversaw a coalition of more than 100 organizations dedicated to making Kansas a healthier place to live and work. The Alliance’s top policy priority has been to expand KanCare. Under Mr. Jordan’s leadership, momentum to expand KanCare has grown and the effort passed the legislature only to fall a few votes short of overriding a gubernatorial veto. He worked with community-based organizations, providers, faith based groups, patient advocacy groups, members of the legislatures, and health foundations.

Prior to joining the Alliance, Mr. Jordan demonstrated a commitment to improving access to health care and health equity. He served as the Dental Access Project Director for Community Catalyst where he led a national campaign to expand access to dental care by adding dental therapists to the dental team.

Mr. Jordan also served as Campaign Director for Massachusetts Affordable Care Today! (MassACT!) where he directed the ballot campaign which in part led to Massachusetts’ landmark health care law (also known as Romneycare). He also brings a wealth of experience in public policy and communications, as well as an extensive national network of colleagues, to the fund.

Terence Mulligan, Angelica Salas, and Geri Yang-Johnson

The California Wellness Foundation announced the election of three new members: Terence Mulligan, Angelica Salas, and Geri Yang-Johnson.

Mr. Mulligan has led the Napa Valley Community Foundation as its president for the last 13 years, where he integrated the foundation into the community as a vital partner that both represented and responded to the area’s urgent needs, including funding a first-ever study on immigration in Napa Valley in 2012. He also worked as the Director of Outreach for Peninsula Community Foundation and previously held several positions at companies in San Francisco, California and Washington, D.C. related to business development, market research, and international trade and economic policy issues.

Angelica Salas has served as Executive Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) for 18 years. Under her leadership, CHIRLA has led successful campaigns for day-laborer centers, in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants, and eligibility to obtain drivers licenses for all Californians. Before becoming Executive Director, Ms. Salas held administrative and programmatic positions at CHIRLA. Previously, she worked for Mercer County Hispanic Association improving lives within the Latino community of Mercer County, New Jersey. Ms. Salas serves as a board member for six different organizations, including UNITE LA and Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy.

As Vice President of Community Relations for Wells Fargo, Geri Yang-Johnson manages community development investments in Central California to improve the lives of low- and moderate-income families, a position she has held for the last six years. Previously, she was a Program Officer for Fresno Regional Foundation, and a Project and Case Manager for Fresno Center for New Americans, providing case management and managing programs that serve refugees. She has served as a board member for a number of organizations, including the Women’s Foundation of California, where she was the youngest person to have served on its board. She received the Fresno Trailblazer Award and Business Street’s 40 Under 40 award, both presented in 2016.

Carla Batts

The Allegany Franciscan Ministries announced that Carla Batts joined its team as the Community Investment Specialist. Ms. Batts has an extensive background in the nonprofit arena working with youth, teenagers, and their families as well as experience providing key support in a statewide philanthropic organization.

She joins Allegany Franciscan Ministries after over five years as Office Manager at the Florida Philanthropic Network in Tampa, Florida, a highly respected statewide membership network of philanthropic organizations working to build philanthropy to shape a better Florida.

As Community Investment Specialist, Ms. Batts supports the administration of Major, Tau, Common Good Initiative, and other grant/community investment programs, and serves as the initial point of contact for grant applicants, providing information and guidance to grant seekers and grant partners regarding Allegany goals and priorities, and the application process.

Bonnie J. Hackbarth

Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky President and CEO Ben Chandler has named Bonnie J. Hackbarth Vice President, External Affairs. Ms. Hackbarth formerly was Communications Director at the foundation. Her new title reflects her broadened role over the past year, which includes communications, government relations, and building and coordinating a statewide coalition of tobacco-reduction advocates.

Jonathan M. Ellen, MD and Katurah Jenkins-Hall, PhD

Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg elected Jonathan M. Ellen, MD, as Chair of its board. Dr. Ellen is President and Vice Dean of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. He succeeds founding Board Chair Steven C. Dupré, who served from April 2013 to September 2017.

Dr. Ellen joined the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1999. He was named Vice Dean for Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2011 and President of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2012. Dr. Ellen is a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a professor of epidemiology and population, family and reproductive health in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He also serves as president of the St. Pete Innovation District.

Vice Chair Dr. Katurah Jenkins-Hall was the first African-American woman to be awarded a PhD in psychology from the University of South Florida, Tampa. She retired from the university after a 30-year career and has served as a licensed clinical psychologist for 30 years, with a specialization in cultural diversity. She is an author, ordained minister, and active volunteer, championing the cause of racial equity.

The following board officers and committee chairs were also elected: Keisha Bell, Esquire, Secretary; Janet Paroo, Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair; Karen Wolchuck-Sher, Governance Committee Chair; and Donna J. Peterson, ScD, MHS, Strategy Committee Chair. Mr. Dupré and retiring Trustee Mr. Jay Miller were honored with a lifetime appointment to the President’s Cabinet.

Tyler Covington, Dr. James Hoekstra, and Dr. Linda Taylor

The Foundation for a Healthy High Point introduced Mr. Tyler Covington, Dr. James Hoekstra, and Dr. Linda Taylor as the three newest members to the board of directors in 2018.

Mr. Covington is the Co-President of Harriss and Covington, a family business based in High Point, North Carolina. He represents the fifth generation of leadership for the company and directs all business development, research, and development efforts for the more than 280 employees.

Dr. Hoekstra is the President of High Point Medical Center. He serves on Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s strategy leadership team and is a key physician leader in the health system, helping drive growth of clinical programs and foster strong academic relationships.

Dr. Taylor is an experienced leader and physician with 29 years practicing Emergency Medicine, 24 of which have been in the High Point Community.
