Philanthropy @ Work – Transitions – October 2016

Amie Shei

The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts is pleased to announce that Dr. Amie Sheihas been named Vice President for Programs effective November 1, 2016. She has been the recipient of several fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship from the U.S. Department of State; a Foreign Languages and Area Studies Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education; and a Training Fellowship from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which helped to support her dissertation research on improving access to health care for those living in poverty in Brazil. Derek Coy

The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) has named Derek Coy as its new Veterans’ Health Officer. A United States Marine veteran who served in Iraq, Sgt. Coy previously worked for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, the fastest-growing veterans organization in the United States. He also worked for the American Civil Liberties Union and The Doe Fund.

An NYSHealth-supported assessment by the RAND Corporation found that nearly one-half of New York’s returning veterans prefer to receive care and services outside of the Veterans Affairs (VA) system. The need for mental health services is particularly important; nearly one-quarter of returning veterans have a probable diagnosis of post-traumatic stress or major depression.

In his role as Veterans’ Health Officer, Sgt. Coy will focus on (1) expanding choices and access to community-based services and care, beyond what is available in VA-run facilities; (2) leveraging federal and private funding opportunities to increase the dollars available for services for returning veterans in New York State; and (3) serving as a thought leader, convener, and advocate to improve the health of returning veterans and their families through public policy and awareness strategies.

Robert Eckardt

Robert E. Eckardt, executive vice president of the Cleveland Foundation, is retiring at the end of 2016 after nearly 35 years with the organization. He joined the foundation in 1982 as a program officer for social service programs related to aging and public health and his role expanded to include other areas of grantmaking. He rose through a series of positions, including senior program officer, manager of programs and evaluation, and vice president for programs and evaluation, before becoming executive vice president.

Dr. Eckardt has been an active leader in philanthropic professional groups. He served on the board of directors of Grantmakers in Health, which honored him in 2006 with the Terrance Keenan Leadership Award in Health Philanthropy, and was a faculty member for the Terrance Keenan Institute. He was a founding board member of Grantmakers in Aging and Funders Concerned About AIDS. He also is a past chair of the Grantmakers Evaluation Network. For his contributions to philanthropy, he received the Council on Foundations Distinguished Grantmaker Award in 2011.
