Every community is affected by addiction and mental health issues. Although there is growing recognition of the importance of addressing substance use, mental illness, trauma, and emotional well-being, approaches and systems are too often siloed and disparities persist.

Those focused on adverse childhood experiences, justice-involved youth, integrated care, the opioid epidemic, and other critical issues joined together to discuss tactics and explore common questions, including:

  • What are the emerging trends and key opportunities for advancing behavioral health?
  • How can funders leverage the Affordable Care Act, Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity law, and other timely policies to accelerate change?
  • Where can philanthropy better align and coordinate efforts to improve the continuum of prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery supports?

This timely conversation helped funders map out behavioral health approaches, forecast future scenarios, and plan for the next phase of work. Participants explored potential areas for collaboration and emerged with new ideas, contacts, and concrete action steps to effectively advance systems change at the local, state, and national levels.

As part of this meeting, Michael Botticelli, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, delivered the third annual Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture which is available as a GIH Podcast.
