SASH: Health Equity Begins at Home
A decade ago, primary care practices and housing non-profits in Vermont partnered to reduce chronic conditions among older adults and younger adults with a disability in collaboration with the state’s Blueprint for Health. Today, as an extender of the Blueprint, Support and Services at Home (SASH), which supports healthy aging in place, is helping to advance health equity in the state.
The Gun Violence Epidemic: Lessons From Newark, New Jersey
The Newark, New Jersey community has made remarkable progress improving community safety and reducing gun violence. This past June, a seminal report, The Future of Public Safety: Exploring the Power and Possibility of Newark’s Reimagined Public Safety Ecosystem, was released by Equal Justice USA, the City of Newark, and the Newark Community Street Team. Researchers utilized community participatory research to assess Newark’s impactful approaches to improving public safety.
What Can Be Done About Disparities in Birth Outcomes? Follow The BIPOC Leaders
There has long been a movement of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) birth and reproductive justice leaders addressing the impact of racism and oppression on pregnant and birthing people and their families. Their work has galvanized funders and policymakers to focus their efforts on ending the inequities in birth outcomes, opening up a national conversation about advancing community driven solutions to our country’s perinatal health crisis as well as creating opportunity for change within philanthropy.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation announced a call for proposals for its two responsive grantmaking programs: Special Initiative and Catalyst Funds.
MetroWest Health Foundation: January 2023
Concerned about the health impacts associated with the lack of affordable housing, the foundation released a report detailing the affordable housing crisis in the MetroWest area of Massachusetts. The report, “Shut Out: Understanding the affordable housing crisis in MetroWest,” details the high costs of and instability in the region’s housing market over the past decade, and how the pandemic has intensified these issues.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina: January 2023
A recent external evaluation and new report from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, “Centering Equity in Grantmaking,” has identified several successes as well as lessons learned related to the foundation’s efforts to center equity and to design a grantmaking process that is inclusive and accessible.

Behavioral Health Strategies
GIH conducted a survey in late 2024 on funder engagement in behavioral health. This fact sheet, based on a sample of 139 health funders, summarizes the current trends, gaps, successes and challenges for funders. It also highlights philanthropy’s continued commitment to behavioral health while also signaling concern about the upcoming funding environment.
2024 Health Equity Survey: Understanding the Changing Landscape
In 2024, Grantmakers In Health (GIH) surveyed its Funding Partners to understand how their health equity work has evolved. The survey consisted of 40 questions including demographic information, program focus areas, partner engagement, organizational strategy, priority population, successes, and challenges. This report summarizes findings from the Health Equity Survey titled, “Understanding the Changing Landscape.”
