Rx Foundation released Signals from the Field, a new report that shares what the foundation learned from nearly 700 organizations that applied to its Building Capacity for Health Advocacy grant program in 2025. The response to this grant cycle was unprecedented, and it gave the foundation team a powerful view into what nonprofit organizations across the country are naming, building, and needing in this moment.
The report highlights several clear signals from the field:
- Demand for capacity-building support far exceeds current philanthropic investment.
- More and more diverse organizations have identified advocacy, organizing, and civic engagement as crucial strategies for advancing health justice.
- Many organizations are doing this work with limited infrastructure, staffing challenges, and constrained long-term resources.
- BIPOC-led organizations are playing a critical role in health justice work, often while operating with smaller budgets and fewer resources.
- Trust, transparency, and communication remain central to stronger funder-nonprofit relationships.
The Rx Foundation created this report because nonprofits share significant insights with funders through application processes, but those learnings almost always stay internal. With Signals from the Field, the authors can share what they observed within the broader field and contribute to the conversation about what it will take to sustain community-based organizations working toward health justice over time.
