A new study by the New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) Policy and Research Director Mark Zezza, published in the journal PLOS ONE, examined regional variation in Medicare spending across New York State. Dr. Zezza's research found that, while gaps in spending have narrowed over time, substantial variation remains across counties.
Even after controlling for differences in local prices and health status, there was a 34 percent difference between the lowest- and highest-spending counties' per capita Medicare spending in 2016. The findings have important implications for strategies to reduce health care spending.
