From breakout sessions to quick takes and wellness activities to two inspiring plenary sessions, every corner during day two of the Grantmakers In Health (GIH) Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Health was filled with conversation and connection. The day’s agenda focused on how funders can find and use their voices to stand up in this moment of change, including doubling down on their values; taking bigger, bolder risks alongside grantees; and seeking partnerships spanning the private and public sectors.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Health is more than this year’s Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy theme; it is the foundation for every planned session, unexpected learning moment, and conversation in Baltimore from June 8-11. The pre-conference kicked off with a range of discussions centered on the theme, including the state of Medicaid after H.R. 1, the connection between democracy and better health outcomes, and collaborations in public health funding.

Episcopal Health Foundation: October 2024
Episcopal Health Foundation’s (EHF) annual poll shows continuing health care affordability and access crisis in Texas. EHF’s poll found that 64 percent of Texans said they skipped or postponed some sort of health care because of the cost. That includes things like check-ups, treatments, tests, filling prescriptions, and dental care. That percentage is slightly down from the 68 percent who said they skipped care last year – the highest percentage in the six-year history of EHF’s poll.
The Commonwealth Fund: October 2024
The Commonwealth Fund released a report, Mirror, Mirror 2024: A Portrait of the Failing U.S. Health System, to compare health system performance in 10 countries, including the United States, to glean insights for United States improvement. It conducted an analysis of 70 health system performance measures in five areas: access to care, care process, administrative efficiency, equity, and health outcomes.

A new Grantmakers In Health survey of health funder leadership, staff, and boards found that health funder organizations are more racially and ethnically diverse than the broader field of philanthropy.
New America Report Examines Subminimum Wage for Disabled Workers
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employers are allowed to pay disabled workers less than the federal minimum wage, which has significant impacts on these workers’ health and well-being. A report from New America examines, state by state, the policies that drive the use or elimination of the subminimum wage, as well as the programs each state provides to more comprehensively support individuals with disabilities as they seek meaningful employment and fair wages.
