At this year’s GIH annual conference, I found myself surrounded by hundreds of philanthropic leaders deeply committed to improving the health and well-being of their communities. Again and again, I met funders whose work was grounded in a particular place, population, or issue. These funders know their communities intimately. They understand local history, relationships, and the needs of their communities. Their focus is one of their greatest strengths.
Changing the Vaccine Conversation Before It’s Too Late—What Can Philanthropy Do?
In July 2026, the United States reached a grim milestone when the number of confirmed cases of measles exceeded the total for all of 2025. On August 10, 2026, the White House issued an executive order directing changes to the federal childhood vaccine schedule and categories, and calls for availability of separate measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines. The science has not changed, but the new framework could significantly slow down the delivery of protective immunizations from these serious diseases.
Community Focused Strategies to Improve Health in West Baltimore
For far too long, residents of west Baltimore have faced continuous uphill battles to access basic amenities, services, jobs, and quality of life. Racism, redlining, eminent domain, disinvestment, school closures, poverty, violent crime, chronic health conditions, failed affordable housing, and the outmigration of businesses and residents have left behind vacant housing and dilapidated commercial corridors. These challenges result in a 17-year difference in life expectancy between residents of west Baltimore neighborhoods compared to other parts of the city.

Horizon Foundation: September 2024
The Horizon Foundation opened its 2024 Housing Justice Request for Proposals, seeking organizational partners to co-create solutions that remove barriers to obtaining and sustaining affordable, high-quality rental housing and home ownership. The first phase of co-creation will focus on three housing priorities over the next two years: expanding renter protections, sustaining homeownership, and strengthening systems to advance housing justice.
Rasmuson Foundation: September 2024
Rasmuson Foundation is accepting applications for Tier 1 and Community Support grants, now with increased award sizes. These awards form a central part of Rasmuson Foundation’s grantmaking activities, supporting nonprofit organizations in Alaska with key resources and infusions of capital.

The David & Lucile Packard Foundation published its 2023 Grantee Perception Report, which includes feedback from the foundation’s grantees through results from the Grantee Perception Survey administered by the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP). The report outlines five areas of improvement based on the results.
Mother Cabrini Health Foundation: September 2024
Mother Cabrini Health Foundation released its 2023-2024 Impact Report, which outlines the foundation’s mission and strategies to address the health and wellbeing of vulnerable New Yorkers. The report outlines the foundation’s grantmaking process and the direct results of this year’s grants on a statewide level. This year, the foundation awarded 514 grants totaling $172 million to support nonprofit organizations addressing community health needs and disparities across New York State.
Greater Rochester Health Foundation: September 2024
2023 Annual Highlights “Partnering for Healthier Communities” showcases the impactful work of the foundation’s grantee partners across various areas and efforts to improve health equity. In 2023, Greater Rochester Health Foundation committed more than $8.1 million to 85 organizations, addressing critical issues such as mental health, racial equity, and public health, with grant-funded work reaching more than 75,000 individuals.
The Commonwealth Fund: September 2024
This brief reports on responses from community health centers leaders who were surveyed about care delivery, technology, workforce, and more. Findings highlight critical staff shortages amid rising demand for care and limited resources.
