Grantmakers In Health (GIH) represents hundreds of philanthropic organizations from across the country. These foundations and corporate giving programs are deeply committed to health, equity, fairness, and opportunity for all people. In light of the recent controversy surrounding HB2, North Carolina’s new state law, the GIH Board of Directors has decided not to hold the 2017 Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy in North Carolina. Philanthropy manages resources held in the public trust, and we cannot ask the field to spend those funds in a state that appears to violate civil rights or sanction discrimination in any form. We were excited about holding the annual conference in Charlotte and deeply regret that this choice was necessary. We look forward to bringing the largest gathering of health grantmakers to North Carolina in a future year, when this issue is resolved.
