Patricia Mathews · 2016 Health Equity Hero Award
Patricia Mathews, President and CEO of the Northern Virginia Health Foundation, has won the Mid-Atlantic Regional Health Equity Council 2016 Health Equity Hero Award. The award recognizes the exemplary achievement of individuals who support community efforts in the goal of ending health disparities and promoting health equity.
Ms. Mathews is the first President & CEO of the Northern Virginia Health Foundation, a position that involves developing coalitions and collaboratives and that she assumed after gaining more than 25 years of philanthropic experience. She has been recognized for her efforts to directly address the social determinants of health in underserved communities by working with local government agencies and foundations to shed light on the struggles faced by people living in Northern Virginia. Ms. Mathews led the foundation to conduct research on the link between an individual’s ZIP code and life expectancy and to publish a related report titled, “Why Life Expectancy Varies in Northern Virginia”.

Jennifer Martnick · 2016 Superstar Award
Saint Luke’s Foundation announced that Jennifer Martnick, a Palliative Care Team Leader with Hospice of the Western Reserve, is the recipient of its 2016 Superstar Award. This award recognizes the very best direct service staff in the field who distinguish themselves and their work by using data to constantly adjust their service delivery approach while intentionally striving to build transformational relationships with those being served.
Saint Luke’s Foundation cosponsors the Superstar Award with the Superstar Foundation. The Superstar Award is a $5,000 prize.
Additionally, the Superstar Foundation announced that Ms. Martnick has been named a national Veronica Award recipient for her work. Veronica Award recipients are chosen from the pool of all local Superstar Award recipients throughout the United States. Ms. Martnick is one of only four Superstar Award winners chosen to receive a prestigious national Veronica Award which includes an additional $5,000 prize.
In her work, Ms. Martnick manages nurse practitioners and social workers working in palliative care.
