In Fairfax County, approximately 58,000 residents were food insecure prior to the pandemic – the most in the Commonwealth of Virginia – and that figure is estimated to have doubled in the last year. To help spur decisionmakers to enact the changes necessary to create a stronger regional food system, the “Route 1 Lived Experiences Report,” released by the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture with support from the Northern Virginia Health Foundation, documents the stories of 15 county residents living along the Route 1 Corridor, one of the region’s “islands of disadvantage.” Based on these stories and the challenges they help illuminate, the report offers recommendations to help put the region on the road to adopting new solutions to food insecurity.
