Blue Shield Foundation of California (San Francisco, CA)
Blue Shield of California Foundation announced $6 million in grants to contribute to breaking the cycle of domestic violence by enlisting boys and men of color, and to engage new advocates in the development of broader and more integrated approaches to improve the health and lives of the Californians most in need.
The foundation’s third quarter funding includes support for a unique leadership program that engages men and boys of color in the movement to end domestic violence. A grant to PolicyLink, an Oakland, California-based research and social action institute, will expand their work with The Alliance for Boys and Men of Color to explore the detrimental impacts of taking a criminal justice approach to domestic violence, and to investigate the role of trauma, culture, and community violence on young lives and develop preventative solutions.
Another grant will support the Public Health Institute to manage the newly created “California Future Health Workforce Commission.” The foundation joins The California Endowment, The California Health Care Foundation, and The California Wellness Foundation in this collaborative effort to broaden and strengthen the state’s health care workforce to meet current and future demands, and to improve access to high-quality care, particularly for patients in underserved communities.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation (New York, NY)
University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine cardiologist Anil Gehi, MD, will use a $1.7 million grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation to further innovate a care model, launched in 2015, that reduced hospitalizations for patients with atrial fibrillation (Afib) presenting in the emergency room by more than 30 percentage points in its first year. The three-year grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation will enable Dr. Gehi to continue development of a new protocol he established at UNC Medical Center through a pilot grant from the UNC Center for Health Innovation and adapt and evaluate its application in primary care and urgent care settings as well. UNC President Margaret Spellings applauded Dr. Gehi’s work and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation team. “We’re committed to increasing the amount of world-class research at our universities because these efforts spur economic growth and improve the quality of life of our citizens,” said President Spellings. “We are extremely proud of Dr. Gehi’s work and thankful that it is being sustained through the generosity of the BMS Foundation.” “Supporting significant innovations in access to cardiovascular care that are homegrown by those caring for patients in safety net settings is a top priority for the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation,” said John Damonti, president, Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. “This partnership with UNC Health Care will help patients access the right care, in the right setting, in a timely manner and receive the education and support they need to manage their Afib.”
For many Afib patients – particularly those in vulnerable populations – access to specialty care can be extremely limited. Gehi hopes this grant can improve and perhaps remedy the lack of access in areas in and around the Triangle, Rocky Mount, and High Point through partnerships with other hospitals. The Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation grant will allow Gehi to expand this program throughout the UNC Health Care system, and potentially into other clinics and hospitals in North Carolina and across the country.

CDC Foundation (Atlanta, GA)
The CDC Foundation activated its Emergency Response Fund to help the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tackle the widespread health challenges created by Hurricane Harvey. The fund will extend CDC’s response, providing essential supplies and vital assistance as front line experts work with partners to address community health needs and public health infrastructure in the storm’s aftermath. While there are many organizations that respond with aid during a disaster, the CDC Foundation’s fund is unique because it supports CDC experts as they address public health threats that arise in the days, weeks, and months after an emergency situation. In the past, the CDC Foundation’s Emergency Response funds helped save and improve lives by supporting CDC’s efforts in response to Hurricane Katrina, the Ebola and Zika epidemics, the Haiti earthquake, and the Southeast Asian tsunami.
