Partnering with Tribal Communities to Improve Nutrition and Food Access
American Indian and Alaska Native tribal communities have some of the poorest health outcomes and highest rates of chronic disease and illness in the country, and poor nutrition and access to healthy foods is a key contributor. That said, these communities have a wealth of resources and knowledge that make them invaluable partners to finding culturally-based solutions to solve these health disparities. In this podcast, GIH Program Director Colin Pekruhn interviews Abigail Echo-Hawk, Chief Research Officer for the Seattle Indian Health Board and Director of the Urban Indian Health Institute, about some of the innovations being developed in tribal communities, how disruptions to indigenous food systems influence individual health, and the opportunities for philanthropy to partner with tribal communities.
