The Rippel Foundation released the findings from a study conducted in 2016 that set out to find the communities best positioned to participate in ReThink Health’s Ventures initiative. The goal was to understand and define the national landscape of multisector partnerships for health and to identify those most poised to accelerate transformation in their region.
ReThink Health found that even the partnerships that were most developmentally advanced were not yet well poised to move from a focus on improving health (characteristic of early phases of development) to a focus on health system transformation. For example, many partnerships lack involvement from key sectors, including health care payers and economic development organizations. Often, these partnerships focus only on short-term initiatives addressing a specific disease or health outcome, and they mostly rely on unsustainable, short-term grant funding, making it challenging for them to plan beyond a two- to three-year time horizon. Long story short: even the most mature multisector partnerships face an uphill battle to build the collaborative infrastructure necessary to advance their ambitions.
