Janine Saunders, EdD, MPH
The California Endowment appointed Janine Saunders, EdD, MPH, as Director of Learning and Evaluation. Dr. Saunders has 15 years’ experience in research, evaluation, and professional learning. She will partner with The Endowment’s Chief Learning Officer, Dr. Hanh Cao Yu, and help lead its learning and evaluation department activities to ensure local communities, local and statewide grantees, and its board and staff understand the impact of the foundation’s philanthropic work to improve community health in 14 of California’s underserved communities and across the state.
Prior to joining The Endowment, Dr. Saunders was a Program Manager and Principal Investigator at Education, Training & Research Associates in Oakland, California where she planned, coordinated, and managed multiple research and evaluation projects related to health equity, school health, and sexual reproductive health. Dr. Saunders concurrently served as an Independent Research and Evaluation Consultant on various projects in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Paula Pretlow
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation’s newest trustee, Paula Pretlow, was approved unanimously by the board of directors and will begin her term on January 1, 2018.
Ms. Pretlow has built a career helping company leaders maximize shareholder and stakeholder value—negotiating hundreds of millions in revenue across her career. As a consultative thought partner, growth driver, and management executive, she brings a unique blend of strategy, sales planning, and team development to her work. Ms. Pretlow is a former Senior Vice President of The Capital Group, where she headed the firm’s public fund business development and client relationship group and was responsible for large client relationships.
Ms. Pretlow is passionately and actively involved on nonprofit and foundation boards including: The Kresge Foundation; Northwestern University; the San Francisco Symphony; and her synagogue, Congregation Emanu-El, of San Francisco. In the private sector, she serves as an independent trustee on the board of an investment fund. Ms. Pretlow has been recognized with The Women’s Legal Defense & Education Fund’s Aiming High Award, and in 2016, The Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools’ Wall of Fame Humanitarian Award. In 2016, she was the convocation speaker for Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, and an “In the Lead” speaker for Groundbreakers: Women in Leadership Summit, where she shared the program with Gloria Steinem and Ali Wentworth.

Paul H. Mounds, Jr.
Paul H. Mounds, Jr. will join the Connecticut Health Foundation as Vice President of Policy and Communications. In this role, he will be responsible for the foundation’s work to inform and educate policymakers on issues related to health equity.
Mr. Mounds has extensive experience in policymaking and communications at the state and federal levels. He served as Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Relations for Governor Dannel P. Malloy, working with the state’s health and human services agencies and developing relationships with leaders from both parties. Mr. Mounds previously worked for U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, serving as Deputy State Director for Outreach. He began his career in public service as the Federal Grants Coordinator and Press Assistant for U.S. Representative John B. Larson, and eventually served as the congressman’s Communications Director.
Mr. Mounds is a member of Trinity College’s Board of Trustees, where he serves as co-chair of the Student Life Committee, and previously served on the board of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center. Mr. Mounds, who has been working as a public policy consultant in Michigan, will return to Connecticut to join the foundation. He will begin January 8, 2018.

Art Green, Jim Corum, and Kerri Pidcock-Lester
Three of the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation board members, Art Green, Jim Corum, and Kerri Pidcock-Lester, have concluded their terms and retired from the board.
Mr. Green was the foundation’s board chair from July 2014 to June 2017. In his nine years on the Board, he has served on the Executive, Strategic Planning, Marketing/Communications, Grants, and Impact Committees.
Ms. Pidcock-Lester served as a foundation board member for six years, sitting on both the Grants and Nominating Committees.
Mr. Corum served on the board for three years, offering his expertise on both the Nominating and Marketing/Communications Committees.
In June, the foundation’s board of directors welcomed Dana Corp. Plant Manager Danny Aaron, who will serve on the Grants Committee, and retired Pottstown School District Superintendent Jeff Sparagana who will serve on the Strategic Planning and Marketing/Communications Committees.
As of July 1, 2017, Dr. Myra Forrest serves as Chair of the board with Todd Alderfer as Vice Chair and Matt Cappelletti continuing in the role of Treasurer. Dr. Keith Harrison will also continue in the role of Secretary and Doug Trainer will serve as “member-at-large” of the Executive Committee.

Lindy Eichenbaum Lent
Following an extensive national search, Lindy Eichenbaum Lent will be the next President and CEO of Rose Community Foundation.
Ms. Lent comes to the foundation from the nonprofit Civic Center Conservancy, where she has served as Executive Director since 2009. Ms. Lent will assume the role on November 27, 2017.
As Executive Director of the Civic Center Conservancy, Ms. Lent led the organization’s nationally recognized public-private-nonprofit partnerships to revitalize downtown Denver’s historic Civic Center Park through advocacy, capital improvements, community engagement, fundraising, and programming. Prior to leading the Civic Center Conservancy, Ms. Lent served as Communications Director and Senior Advisor for then-Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.
Named a 2017 Denver Business Journal “Thought Leader” and one of the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce’s “Top 25 Most Powerful Women” of 2016, Ms. Lent is a member of the Colorado Women’s Forum and currently serves on the Lowry Redevelopment Authority board of directors. She previously served on the boards of the American Jewish Committee/Colorado Chapter, the Denver Preschool Program Advisory Board, the Golden Triangle Creative District, and the University of Colorado Cancer Center Fund.

Theresa Fay-Bustillos
The Blue Shield of California Foundation is thrilled to welcome Theresa Fay-Bustillos as its newest team member. Ms. Fay-Bustillos officially joined the staff as Chief Program Director on August 21st and is helping to lead the foundation as it continues working toward its mission and search for new solutions that uplift the Californians who struggle most.
Ms. Fay-Busyillos replaces Brenda Solórzano, who recently became the first CEO of Headwaters Health Foundation in Missoula, Montana. In her role, she will manage the strategy and design of foundation programs and grantmaking activities and will contribute to organizational learning and evaluation.
She comes to the foundation not only with an impressive resume, a thoughtful perspective, and years of experience in the philanthropic and nonprofit fields—she also brings a unique drive and determination to advance equity and make a difference for others.
While the United States remains in a state of social and political uncertainty – one that threatens the well-being of its communities – the foundation must adapt, rework, and rethink the way in which it gives to ensure that it’s doing all that it can to support those facing adversity and ensure equity, safety, and possibility for every Californian. As it responds to these challenges, its leadership is encouraged that Ms. Fay-Bustillos will be here to help navigate the road ahead.

Helene Gayle
The Chicago Community Trust selected Dr. Helene Gayle as its new CEO, succeeding Terry Mazany, who stepped down at the end of September. Dr. Gayle will become just the seventh leader in the 102-year history of the community foundation.
Prior to her appointment to lead the Trust, Dr. Gayle served as CEO of the McKinsey Social Initiative, an independent nonprofit organization founded by McKinsey & Company to develop innovative approaches to global social challenges.
Previously, Dr. Gayle served as President and CEO of CARE USA, one of the leading international humanitarian and development organizations. An expert on global development, humanitarian, and public health issues, she spent 20 years with the Centers for Disease Control. Dr. Gayle then worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, directing programs on HIV/AIDS and other global health issues.
Dr. Gayle serves on public company and many nonprofit boards, including: The Coca-Cola Company, Colgate-Palmolive Company, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Brookings Institution, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, New America, and the ONE Campaign. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Public Health Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Medical Association.
Named one of Forbes’ “100 Most Powerful Women,” she has authored numerous articles on global and domestic public health issues, poverty alleviation, gender equality, and social justice.

Michele Lew
The Health Trust has hired Michele Lew as Chief Executive Officer. Currently serving as the Local Government and Community Relations Director for Stanford Health Care, Ms. Lew previously served as President and CEO of Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) from 2005-2016, a nonprofit health and wellness organization with an $18 million annual budget and 170 staff members. Her experience at AACI is where she garnered the respect and reputation as one of Silicon Valley’s most transformative nonprofit leaders.
The Health Trust has a long-standing reputation as a changemaker. Tackling issues such as aging, homelessness, food insecurity, chronic disease management, fluoridation, and serving as one of the largest AIDS Services providers in the bay area, The Health Trust has never shied away from critical health issues plaguing the valley’s most vulnerable people. This factor played a part in Ms. Lew’s decision to take on the role as the next CEO of The Health Trust.
She will begin her role in January 2018. Between now and January 2018, Board Chair, Charlie Bullock, will continue to serve as Interim CEO, while keeping Ms. Lew apprised of all Health Trust-related matters.
