The Central Valley region of California, one of the richest agricultural regions, also has serious health and social problems, such as air pollution, water contamination, mass incarceration and violence. This has put the region’s residents at greater risk for negative health outcomes, including childhood asthma, diabetes, depression, cancer, and trauma. The San Joaquin Valley Health Fund, a funders collaborative of California-based and national funders, is investing in policy and systems change to promote health and racial equity, elevating grassroots voices and informing a replicable strategy for other under-resourced and overburdened regions.
