Biden-Harris Administration Announces $75 Million Investment in Rural Health Care
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced nearly $75 million to support health care services in rural America. Funding will launch new opioid treatment and recovery services in rural communities, strengthen maternal health care in the South, and help rural hospitals stay open.
A Marathon, Not a Sprint
Community Health Workers (CHWs), also referred to as health navigators, advocates, or promotor(a)s, are trusted community members trained to work with local health care and social services to help clients navigate often complex systems of care, while also improving the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund and Health Forward Foundation have long supported CHWs in Kansas and Missouri, providing grants to organizations to support CHWs in a variety of settings – clinical and community-based – as well as supporting coalition-building, training, research, and advocacy efforts.
Elevating Quality to Achieve Equity in Free and Charitable Clinics: The Work of ‘Roadmap to Health Equity’
Each year, more than two million low-income, uninsured, and underinsured people in the United States rely on approximately 1,400 nonprofit free and charitable clinics and charitable pharmacies for essential health care. These clinics use a volunteer/staff model to provide a wide range of health services including medical, dental, pharmacy, vision, and behavioral health services. Many clinics also address social needs, such as connecting patients to housing, food assistance, or employment assistance programs.

Two new funding opportunities are available to support organizations engaging in fostering healthier communities and increasing access to health care in Central Texas. The Community Driven Change and We All Benefit open calls will provide one-time, unrestricted grants to eligible organizations, including previous, current, and new grantees.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation: July 2024
The Special Initiatives grant program provides organizations with a one-time grant of up to $50,000 to pilot or launch a new project over a one-year period. This grant is intended to fund projects that empower communities to advance health equity.
KFF Introduces Health Policy 101—A Primer on U.S. Health Policy
KFF launched a new resource —the Health Policy 101 — an online resource or mini “textbook” about health policy for faculty and students. Drew Altman felt the need for a resource like this ages ago, when he was at MIT writing a book on health care regulation and needed a reference with real detail on public programs and health costs. It took a while to produce it but now it’s ready!

One year ago, as we were just one month into the new administration, I wrote that “At a moment when so much has been described as ‘unprecedented,’ and so much of what we value is being attacked, we need to ask ourselves as individuals, organizations, and a field, what do we stand for? What values do we hold, and what will we do and say to defend them?” Today, the answers to these questions are needed more urgently than ever.

2024 Survey Summary: Health Workforce Strategies
Concerns about the supply, diversity, cultural responsiveness, geographic distribution, and safety of the health workforce have reached a critical level across the country. Philanthropy has a role to play in maximizing the health workforce to achieve patient safety, provider well-being, equitable access, care quality, and improved health outcomes. Therefore, GIH recently conducted a survey to learn about funders’ strategies related to their health workforce investments.
