Every community is affected by addiction and mental health issues, and increasingly grantmakers are expanding their approach to health to include social, emotional, and behavioral approaches. Reducing the impact of mental illness, substance use, trauma, and stress requires cross-sector coordination and strong investments in prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery supports.

The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York announced a new initiative to support children and families through trauma. Co-Creating Well-Being is a multi-year, three-phase initiative to help build community capacity to develop strategies to support children and families who have or are experiencing trauma.

As part of its work to address the opioid epidemic, the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is supporting Groups, a mission-driven medical practice that offers affordable treatment for opioid use disorder in rural communities. CHCF is providing a loan through its Health Innovation Fund, which supports health care technology and service companies working to improve care for underserved communities.
