Housing as a Platform for Health Equity

The Richmond Memorial Health Foundation recently released a report examining how housing affects health outcomes. The report, which analyzes current research on health and housing, was commissioned by the foundation to inform new grantmaking efforts to address the social determinants of health.

As part of a new strategy to move upstream and expand its health equity framework, the foundation has partnered with Invest Health RVA, a community development initiative that aims to revitalize the Richmond Region.

The report provides an evidence base documenting the numerous health inequities associated with unsafe, unstable, and unaffordable housing, including increased risk for chronic disease and trauma. The report also outlines how past housing policies have led to residential segregation and poor living conditions in communities.
