Healthy Eating / Active Living

Socioeconomic and environmental factors, along with unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits and lack of regular exercise, heavily influence the development of chronic diseases. In response, there is strong philanthropic interest in healthy eating/active living—especially related to the childhood obesity epidemic. GIH has been committed to this issue for over a decade, with a recent focus on policy developments and improving access to nutritious foods.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has released a new case study report of Playworks, a program that provides supervised, inclusive recess programs at schools. Originally Play4Kids, Playworks began as a local program in the San Francisco Bay Area that has since expanded to become a national program serving 1,300 schools in 23 urban communities. The study provides lessons and insights from the scaling of Playworks that could help inform foundations and grantees looking to scale any number of innovative programs.

A new report from the Social Interventions Research & Evaluation Network reviews the research evidence about health care-based screening for food insecurity. Studies exploring the patient and provider acceptability of screening were mixed. Most studies found patients were comfortable being asked about food insecurity and could make patients feel cared for by their providers. In other studies, patients and their caregivers indicated that food insecurity was a sensitive issue, especially for caregivers who feared being reported to social services for not being able to feed their children. The report's authors concluded that more rigorous research is needed to examine screening feasibility, acceptability, and interventions to improve screening rates across multiple settings and patient populations.
